{"id":14795,"date":"2025-12-29T16:41:24","date_gmt":"2025-12-29T23:41:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/?p=14795"},"modified":"2025-12-29T16:41:25","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T23:41:25","slug":"restaurant-branding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/blog\/restaurant-branding\/","title":{"rendered":"Restaurant Branding Wins &amp; Fails: Real Examples To Learn From"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If a pink bell makes you think it\u2019s time to live m\u00e1s, or the color orange makes you want a Dunkalatte, then you\u2019re no stranger to the power of restaurant branding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But what happens when restaurant branding goes wrong?&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this blog, we\u2019ll look at the good, bad, and ugly of restaurant branding, from Cracker Barrel\u2019s recent fiasco to why McDonald\u2019s arches have stayed recognizable since the \u201840s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(And, if you want a deeper dive on why restaurant branding even matters in the first place, check out <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/blog\/coffee-shop-branding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>this blog<\/em><\/a><em>!)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s get started!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Restaurant branding fail: Cracker Barrel\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happened with Cracker Barrel\u2019s restaurant branding<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crackerbarrel.com\/newsroom\/news-releases\/2025\/aug\/cracker-barrel-teams-up-with-country-music-star-jordan-davis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">On August 19, 2025<\/a>, Cracker Barrel launched their \u201cAll the More\u201d campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed to celebrate everything that guests know and love about Cracker Barrel, the campaign included new and returning menu items, restaurant remodels, limited-time deals, a collaboration with country music artist Jordan Davis\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And \u201can enhanced brand look and feel\u201d that included a shiny new logo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the new logo maintained Cracker Barrel\u2019s iconic mustard-yellow branding, the similarities stopped there. The new logo ditched the rest of Cracker Barrel\u2019s instantly recognizable restaurant branding, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crackerbarrel.com\/about\/uncle-herschel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Uncle Herschel<\/a> and his chair, the \u201cOld Country Store\u201d wording, the secondary, brown brand color, and the barrel.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the Cracker Barrel\u2019s \u201cenhanced\u201d brand look also included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/cracker-barrel-customers-divided-renovations-menu-refresh-2025-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remodeling their restaurants<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/cracker-barrel-customers-divided-renovations-menu-refresh-2025-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">About 20 locations<\/a> got a makeover under this new direction, creating spaces with brighter walls, with fewer antiques, a more open floor plan, and, of course, the brand-new logo.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1640\" height=\"924\" src=\"https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14801\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2.jpg 1640w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2-1024x577.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2-1536x865.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1640px) 100vw, 1640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How did the public respond to Cracker Barrel\u2019s new restaurant branding?\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To put it simply:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Really, really poorly.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People were instantly furious that the \u201cOld Timer\u201d look and feel was changed, taking to social media to share their not-so-positive thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some users were upset about how boring the new logo design is, calling it \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Design\/comments\/1mvokqf\/comment\/n9uppmx\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">minimalism done wrong<\/a>\u201d and claiming it looks too \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Design\/comments\/1mvokqf\/comment\/n9s65cm\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corporate<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Design\/comments\/1mvokqf\/comment\/n9sumkt\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Others said<\/a> the new restaurant branding strayed from Cracker Barrel\u2019s traditional feel, because \u201cpeople go to Cracker Barrel so they can be taken OUT of the 21st century, not through it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The negative impact of the new logo didn\u2019t stop at social media, either. In the week following the logo release, Cracker Barrel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cracker-barrel-cbrl-stock-down-200-million-loss-new-logo-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">market value dropped by ~$100M<\/a>, with shares dropping by 7.2% in just a few days.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, Cracker Barrel\u2019s team was paying attention to the public\u2019s response \u2014 and they actually listened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How did Cracker Barrel respond to the public\u2019s concerns?\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Just one week after the initial rebranding announcement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crackerbarrel.com\/allthemore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cracker Barrel shared a statement <\/a>addressing all the new restaurant branding issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve shared your voices in recent weeks not just on our logo, but also on our restaurants. We\u2019re continuing to listen,\u201d the statement read. \u201cToday, we\u2019re suspending our remodels. If your restaurant hasn\u2019t been remodeled, you don\u2019t need to worry, it won\u2019t be.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement also specifically calls out the logo feedback:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe thank our guests for sharing your voices and love for Cracker Barrel. We said we would listen, and we have. Our new logo is going away and our \u201cOld Timer\u201d will remain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout Q4, the Cracker Barrel team has continued doing damage control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crackerbarrel.com\/newsroom\/news-releases\/2025\/oct\/reinforce-focus-on-food-and-guest-experience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">At the beginning of October<\/a>, the brand announced they\u2019d cut ties with Prophet, the consultancy that \u201cadvised [them on] previous brand refresh initiatives, including the logo.\u201d They also worked to rebuild hype by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crackerbarrel.com\/newsroom\/news-releases\/2025\/oct\/cracker-barrel-sets-the-table-for-a-delicious-holiday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bringing back some holiday favorites<\/a> (and introducing some new menu items) just in time for Thanksgiving.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, all we can do is wait and see what happens with Cracker Barrel over the next few months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only time will tell if Cracker Barrel\u2019s restaurant branding rollback was enough to keep people coming back \u2014 or if it drove the wedge even further.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"separators-custom-box  \"  style='background-color: #fff8f1;'>\n\n\t\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"cta_title\" \n\t\t\tstyle='color:#000000;'\t\t\t>Want to avoid a restaurant branding blowout? It was simply too much, too fast \u2014 and Cracker Barrel paid the price.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cCracker Barrel could be modernized without completely changing everything about what the company is. Especially as a southern staple. Their changes should have been more [low-key] and smaller in the beginning.\u201d \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Design\/comments\/1mvokqf\/comment\/n9z8bh2\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reddit user Substantial-Fan3885<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2 \u2014 It strayed too far from tradition\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>What Cracker Barrel\u2019s new restaurant branding tried to replace is actually what people loved most about the brand: its quirky, kitschy, country-store aesthetic. Customers couldn\u2019t (or wouldn\u2019t) reconcile the new branding with the traditional Cracker Barrel they know and love.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c[Part] of what makes [Cracker Barrel] fun is all the old-timey decorations and whatnot. [Without all that] stuff it would lose a ton of appeal to me.\u201d \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Design\/comments\/1mvokqf\/comment\/n9y18k6\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reddit user Affectionate-Day2743<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 \u2014 It came across as inauthentic\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>With a tagline like \u201cRooted in Hospitality Since 1969,\u201d Cracker Barrel has become almost synonymous with old-timey country kitchen. So, when their restaurant branding turned totally modern and minimalistic, it felt inauthentic and gimmicky, because it didn\u2019t match their values.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis screams \u201cwe just want to cheapen the food and become like every other corporate restaurant.\u201d\u201d \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Design\/comments\/1mvokqf\/comment\/n9sjtor\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reddit user boneappleteeth1234<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Restaurant branding success stories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s safe to say that Cracker Barrel didn\u2019t have the most <em>positive <\/em>restaurant branding experience\u2026 but lots of other industry moguls have! Here are three examples of restaurant branding (and rebranding) done right.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1 \u2014 McDonald\u2019s\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>McDonald\u2019s is an expert in the restaurant branding game. They\u2019ve been subtly (and not-so-subtly) redesigning their logo pretty consistently since the 1940s, making changes to the logo as recently as 2018.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the reasons McDonald\u2019s restaurant branding efforts have been so successful is because they never stray too far from their roots. They\u2019ve always maintained the golden arches, the red accent colors, and the slogan, keeping their well-loved brand instantly recognizable (and in the good books of their customers).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1640\" height=\"924\" src=\"https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14802\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3.png 1640w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3-1024x577.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3-768x433.png 768w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3-1536x865.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3-400x225.png 400w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3-200x113.png 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1640px) 100vw, 1640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2 \u2014 Domino\u2019s<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another brand that\u2019s done well with restaurant branding is Domino\u2019s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.dominos.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/dominosr-new-craveable-brand-refresh-makes-you-say-mmm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">October 2025<\/a>, the well-known pizza brand revealed a \u201ccraveable brand refresh.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.dominos.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/dominosr-new-craveable-brand-refresh-makes-you-say-mmm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Their new look<\/a> features brighter, \u201chotter\u201d versions of their signature white\/blue\/red branding, a new gold-and-black design for premium offers, a brand-new font called \u201cDomino\u2019s Sans,\u201d and a fresh jingle sung by the popular artist Shaboozey.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best thing about Domino\u2019s new restaurant branding is that it doesn\u2019t reinvent the wheel \u2014 it just elevates what customers already know and love.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1640\" height=\"924\" src=\"https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14803\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/4.jpg 1640w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/4-1024x577.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/4-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/4-1536x865.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/4-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.getcraver.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/4-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1640px) 100vw, 1640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 \u2014 Subway<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Our third (and final) example of good restaurant branding is Subway.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.subway.com\/2024-11-12-Subway-Unveils-New-Global-Restaurant-Design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">November 2024<\/a>, Subway announced a new image initiative called \u201cFresh Forward 2.0.\u201d Alongside customer experience improvements (like touch-screen kiosks), the new strategy includes updated restaurant branding, including more vibrant decor, \u201celevated lighting, and warmer wood tones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much like McDonald\u2019s and Domino\u2019s, the new Subway restaurant branding works because it doesn\u2019t come out of left field. Ask them! Test out different elements of your new branding with your most loyal customers to get feedback, opinions, and gauge first impressions.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Keep signature elements<\/strong> \u2014 If there\u2019s a specific element in your restaurant branding that customers really love, keep it in the new logo or brand identity. Having a signature element or logo is a good thing because it keeps you top of mind.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Communicate the \u201cwhy\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 Whether you realize it or not, customers can get very invested and attached to your restaurant branding. So, if you want to update things, tell your customers what you\u2019re changing and why. They deserve an explanation!\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Listen, respond, adjust<\/strong> \u2014 The only people more invested in your restaurant than you? Your customers. If (and when) your customers have thoughts about your new restaurant branding, make sure to listen, respond quickly, and actually consider their feedback.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Start small <\/strong>\u2014 Even if your goal is to redo your restaurant branding completely, don\u2019t try to change everything at once. Take things one step at a time and roll out your rebrand gradually.
