Here are the three biggest challenges of starting up coffee shop matcha.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1 \u2014 Matcha can be tricky to integrate into your coffee shop\u2019s existing workflow<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever made matcha before (or watched it be made by someone else), then you know it\u2019s a very specialized process. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marukyu-koyamaen.co.jp\/english\/about-tea\/enjoy-matcha.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">To follow traditional matcha-making methods<\/a>, you need a bamboo whisk and bowl, you need to hand-whisk it, and you need to make it to order \u2014 every time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what\u2019s the solution?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That depends on how committed you are to making ceremonial-grade matcha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to keep your coffee shop\u2019s matcha as authentic as possible, then there\u2019s no <em>real<\/em> workaround to the process. You\u2019ll need to find a way to integrate the matcha-making process into your existing workflow in the most productive way possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re okay with your coffee shop\u2019s matcha being <em>non<\/em> ceremonial-grade, then your options open up a lot more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy old shop sells a sweetened oat milk matcha that we make in big batches at a time and then sits in a \u201ccommercial beverage dispenser\u201d that has a little thing that keeps the batch continuously mixing,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/barista\/comments\/1gmpqjb\/comment\/lw4mz6m\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explains one barista on Reddit<\/a>. \u201cPeople EAT IT UP and it sells for like $8.\u201d<br>Another barista said their shop exclusively offered pre-made, which was good for speed but limited availability for those wanting a more authentic matcha experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[My coffee shop] would batch out [matcha], water, and simple syrup into a squirt bottle and use 1-2oz of the pre-made syrup for drinks,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/barista\/comments\/1gmpqjb\/comment\/lw50xp0\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">they explained<\/a>. \u201c[It] helped with work flow, but if someone wanted freshly whisked, we didn\u2019t really have that on offer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2 \u2014 High-quality matcha can be expensive and difficult for coffee shops to source<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to figuring out how to sell matcha at your coffee shop, one of the biggest hurdles is matcha quality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ujido.com\/pages\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to matcha company UJIDO<\/a>, there are two main grades of matcha: ceremonial grade and culinary grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ceremonial-grade matcha is the top-shelf stuff. It\u2019s the highest-quality you can get, and it\u2019s only meant to be used for drinking (which makes it very expensive).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Culinary-grade matcha is less luxurious than ceremonial-grade and a lot cheaper. What\u2019s the ideal matcha-to-water ratio? Sweetened with honey or agave? Maybe not sweetened at all? What kind of milk for the matcha latte?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can take time, patience, and lots of trial-and-error to figure out what recipe works for you and your customers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, while there might not be any <em>real<\/em> shortcuts to this step, we do have a solution to can make things easier:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Keep it as simple as possible&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consensus among matcha-making baristas seems to be that the simpler you keep your base offering, the better.&nbsp;<br>\u201cI&#8217;d also use an unsweetened matcha so that customers can pick and choose,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/barista\/comments\/1gmpqjb\/comment\/lw4oi36\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said one barista on Reddit<\/a>. \u201cWe often get customers [who] will order a regular matcha with no syrup but we will also get plenty of people ordering our matcha with vanilla, lavender, or simple syrup.
